School Direct (formerly known as the GTP) allows trainees to do on the job training.
Graduates apply for a teaching position as an unqualified teacher and undertake Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) training whilst working and gaining teaching experience. This is being done within independent schools. The school makes its own financial arrangement with the trainee. Many schools pay a salary.
The school works with an initial teacher training (ITT) provider to carry out the training and assessment: many schools pay these costs. Some providers will offer School Direct (QTS) with Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). See the Training Providers list for some of the initial teacher training providers that are working with independent schools - this is not a comprehensive list but includes commonly used providers in the independent sector.
